Toxic Masculinity- why men need feminism too

Many people (especially men) don’t identify with the word FEMINISM because they see it as the opposite of SEXISM; they believe feminists promote the superiority of women over men and that it is a movement from which only women can benefit. To be fair, in the previous articles we talked about what feminism can do to help women overcome the discriminations they face daily. Feminism is something that was created by women and for women, since they are the most oppressed category, but this doesn’t mean that men don’t need it.

The patriarchal society damages also males, and one of the main ways is through the concept of TOXIC MASCULINITY. What is it?

Our society imposes men a list of imperative characteristics they need to fulfill in order to be “alpha” , in order to be considered REAL MEN. Little boys are told not to show emotions (“don’t cry, don’t be like a girl”) except for aggressive emotions. Boys are taught to be the strongest, the most assertive, the most successful and so on; there is no space for empathy, sensibility and kindness. In this way our society has raised men that are not able to talk about their emotions and to express their feelings, to show their weaknesses, and to disagree with the “pack”. There is the constant pressure to be perfect.

Overcoming the problems related to toxic masculinity would require a long process of cultural and social change, however, employers can still do something to improve the situation for their male employees and so for everyone.

Don’t let the toxicity spread, SPEAK OUT. If you witness toxic behaviors don’t remain silent, as an employer you have the duty to intervene and implement punishments.

Kill the “work in excess, no excuses” culture, as an employer allow men the possibility to find time for their families and themselves (Read our article about paternity leave https://feminismatwork.business.blog/2020/02/01/dont-be-dummy-support-the-mummy-but-be-not-baddy-think-first-bout-daddy/(opens in a new tab)).

Include DIVERSITY WORKSHOPS with professional educators to open the conversation about the issue and offer emotional and professional support. It’s important to learn that there is not just one right way to be MEN.

Encourage your employees to share their feelings and ASK FOR HELP. Teach them that there is no need to feel ashamed and how much they can achieve with a little assistance.
